Text messages suspended in CAR

Text messages suspended in CAR BANGUI: Text messages in the Central African Republic are now considered a security threat and their use has been suspended, the telecommunications ministry said on Tuesday. Mobile phone users in the Central African Republic who try to send text messages are getting the response: “SMS not allowed”. “The use of any SMS by all mobile phone subscribers is suspended from Monday (June 2) until further notice,” the ministry said in a letter to mobile phone operators in the conflict-torn country. It said the decision was made by Prime Minister Andre Nzapayeke. Since last week there has been a resurge of violence in the capital Bangui, as well as a call for a general strike relayed by SMS in the past few days. The deeply impoverished, majority Christian country has been struggling to restore security in the face of relentless tit-for-tat attacks between Christian vigilante groups and mostly Muslim ex-Seleka rebels who seized control in a coup...

Turkey lifts YouTube ban

Turkey lifts YouTube ban ISTANBUL: Turkey lifted a controversial ban on YouTube on Tuesday, days after the country’s top court ruled that it breached the right to free speech. The media-sharing site was blocked in Turkey on March 27 after it was used to leak alleged audio recordings of top government, military and spy officials discussing military action in neighbouring war-torn Syria. Internet users in Turkey were widely able to access YouTube on Tuesday after the telecoms authority (TIB) lifted the block on the site. Turkey’s constitutional court ruled on Thursday that the ban on YouTube violated individual rights and freedoms, clearing the way for access to the service to be revived following the two-month ban. “The ban has been lifted in line with the constitutional court order,” a TIB official said. The government earlier scrapped a similar ban on Twitter, which was also blocked in March after it was used to spread damaging anonymous leaks implicating Prime Mi...

Businesses want borders open

LAHORE: Businessmen believe the “business- and industry-friendly” budget should spur investments in the manufacturing sector and boost exports. Mian Mohammad Mansha, the chairman of MCB Bank and Nishat Group, was encouraged to see the government cut subsidies and do away with certain tax exemptions. However, he wanted the government to take more measures to resolve energy sector issues and privatise public sector companies, especially power distribution and generation firms. “It is impossible to revive the public sector businesses without giving them in private hands.” Mr Mansha, who described boost in investment as the biggest challenge facing the economy, urged the government to open trade with India and enhance economic cooperation with other countries in the region for long-term economic growth and stability. “The country would adjust to new market realities once borders are opened,” a statement by his office said. Punjab’s All Pakistan Textile Mills Associatio...

Altaf Hussain arrested in London on charges of money laundering

Altaf Hussain arrested in London on charges of money laundering KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Altaf Hussain was arrested on Tuesday in London on charges of money laundering. Hussain was being investigated for money laundering worth at least 400,000 pounds as well as for incitement to violence and MQM leader Dr Imran Farooq’s murder. The Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE-100 index) fell 780 points immediately after the news came and commercial centres across Sindh's provincial capital started to shut down. MQM leader Farogh Naseem however said that Hussain had not been arrested and Scotland Yard only needed him for a statement in relation to a case. Last week, senior MQM leader Farooq Sattar had disclosed at a public meeting that Hussain’s bank accounts in London were being frozen and had asked party workers and supporters to continue their ‘peaceful struggle’ against the British government. Hussain, who has been living in London for over two decade...

Govt to work for uplift of all provinces, says Sharif

Govt to work for uplift of all provinces, says Sharif GUJRANWALA: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that equal development in all provinces is the priority of his government because he is working for progress of the nation. Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the first phase of the Nandipur Thermal Power Project on Saturday, he said his government would start uplift projects not only in areas where the PML-N received a majority of votes, but also in those parts of the country where people did not vote for his party. He said the government was working to overcome the power crisis, but other sectors were also not being neglected, citing proposed projects like Lahore-Karachi Motorway and upgradation of Gwadar city. Mr Sharif said Rs40 billion had been released for purchase of land for Diamer Bhasha Dam, which would provide water for agriculture and generate 4,500MW of cheap electricity. Dasu Dam on the Indus River was also a priority of his government, he added....

Farzana Parveen’s family claims husband killed her

Farzana Parveen’s family claims husband killed her LAHORE: The family of a pregnant woman who was bludgeoned to death in broad daylight near the Lahore High Court accused her husband of killing her, in stark contrast to his version of a story that has shocked people around the world. Police and witnesses said Farzana Parveen, 25, was murdered by assailants including her own father outside the Lahore High Court building on Tuesday because she had married a man of her own choosing, Muhammed Iqbal, instead of a cousin they had selected for her. But on Saturday, Farzana's elder sister said it was Iqbal who had killed her. “Muhammed Iqbal and his accomplices killed Farzana, and her father and the rest of her family were wrongly accused of murder,” Khalida Bibi told reporters in Lahore. “I was present at the scene when she came out of the lawyer's chamber and as soon as she saw us standing on the other side of the road, she rushed towards us. Iqbal and his accomplice...
